Do Your Work Benefits Include Pet Insurance?

Corporations often provide all kinds of perks, like gym memberships and discounts on alternative therapies—and in some cases, pet health insurance. Embrace Pet Insurance estimates that over 1,500 companies currently offer this voluntary benefit. They have nothing to lose since you pay 100 percent, after the 5–10 percent group discount.

According to the fifth Annual Study of Employee Benefit Trends, by Metropolitan Life Insurance Co, 39 percent of employers believe it’s either “extremely important” or “very important” to provide these and other voluntary benefits. Kathy McPhillips, director of benefits for Charming Shoppes Inc, added pet insurance in 2007, along with homeowners and auto insurance.

Philips said the goal was “to really enhance our overall benefits package and some things we thought would be of particular value to our associates, full- and part-time.”

Other companies that offer pet insurance include Comcast, Nestle, Ford Motor Co, Home Depot, Office Depot, Google, the Walt Disney Co, Sprint, and Chipotle Mexican Grill Restaurants. Pop by HR when you have a chance—your company may provide pet insurance, too!
