In many cases in life you get what you pay for, but that isn’t universally true. It is possible to get cheap pet insurance to cover unforeseen veterinary expenses.
In an earlier post, we reviewed some of the major players in the pet insurance industry. Many of them offer levels of care with different premiums and deductibles for each. Odds are a less expensive plan charges a higher deductible—meaning you’ll need to pay more out of pocket when you file a claim with the insurance company. But this will allow you some assistance without draining your wallet each month.
Pet insurance companies have other methods of keeping their costs low. For example, they may only cover a certain amount per year for a chronic illness, or just a portion of time throughout the entire illness (like the first year). It’s preferable to find a plan that renews your coverage annually so you’re never left shouldering the financial burden completely on your own.
A cheap pet insurance policy may not be the most comprehensive; after deductibles you could still end up paying hundreds of dollars for incidents. But you will have some help when you need it—if you need it at all.
